Together with Prof. Dr. Axel Preuße from ifm (Institute for Mine Surveying, Mining Damage and Geophysics in Mining) Prof. Frenz visited China in October. He went from Beijing to Qingdao and Xuzhou in the province of Jiangsu. In Qingdao Frenz gave lectures at the law faculty on digitization, data protection, data ownership and intellectual property - topics which met with great interest in China. Furthermore, a cooperation agreement between the Faculty of Georesources and Materials Engineering of the RWTH Aachen University and five engineering schools of the China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) was concluded on 23 October 2018 in Xuzhou and signed in Nanjing in the presence of NRW Economics Minister Pinkwart. Pinkwart also accepted patronage of the two yearbooks "Industry 4.0" and "Sustainable Smart Mining" published by Frenz and Preuße at Springer Nature from 2019.
The cooperation between RWTH Aachen University and CUMT, through which the two universities are to establish joint links in research and teaching, is a further important step in the 30-year partnership between the province of Jiangsu and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The cooperation will kick off with a recently agreed international symposium, which will focus in particular on digitisation/industry 4.0, the design of industrial landscapes and the transfer of technology and know-how in mining.

In cooperation with Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Clausen from the Institute for Advanced Mining Technologies Prof. Dr. Walter Frenz held a lecture about Mining 4.0 and data security.
